Analysis
The presentation, “How to Speak So That People What to Listen” by Julian Treasure, presented by TED, combines clear content, strong timing and pacing, thoughtful style, nice techno execution and simple visual design. The main idea of the presentation is that people’s speech patterns have a great impact on whether others listen and interact with them. According to Julian Treasure, communication involves both what we say and how we say it. He presents the idea of the “seven deadly sins of speaking” which include actions like gossip, negativity, complaining and exaggeration. These factors diminish the trust of the audience and make them less likely to listen. Instead the principles of HAIL (honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love) should be used in order to create meaningful communication. He also introduces vocal techniques that can enhance the delivery of speakers, including pitch pace volume and timbre.
The timing and passing of the presentation given by Julian was done very well. A relatable question was asked in the beginning about feeling ignored, which can immediately grab the attention of the audience. The important topics were brought up gradually instead of all at once. He first addressed negative speaking habits before positive principles in order to create clear contrast. He often used pauses and changed pace in order to emphasise important points. For example, he slowed down when describing vocal techniques, so that the audience had time to absorb the information. These methods of pacing and timing keep the audience interested and prevent the speech from being overwhelming.
The overall style of the presentation is engaging. He often incorporated humor, and audience participation to add a performative element to the speech. For example, he invited the audience to do a quick vocal warm up, while demonstrating different vocal techniques. This friendly style helps to build a connection between the speaker and the audience, which increases interest.
The visual design of the presentation is simple and efficient. The slides are minimalist and have a few words or images at a time. This can prevent visual overload and keep the attention of the audience on the speaker. Only key terms were highlighted which helped the audience follow the format of the talk. Instead of taking the place of the speaker, the slides supported him.
The technical execution of the presentation was done smoothly and professionally. The quality of the audio is clear, which is important for this specific presentation. The video recording is steady and bright, which allows viewers to see the body language and expressions of the speaker. These elements help the message and guarantee that the audience can concentrate on the content.
In conclusion, the presentation is effective because all of the key elements work together and create an appealing learning experience.
